Metropolitan Transportation Authority Pays over $1.1 billion

June 13th, 2008 · No Comments

Since 1996, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has had about 87,000 personal injury claims, resulting in $1.1 billion in settlement costs according to a report from the state comptroller.   Notable cases include a $285, 046 settlement paid by the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad to passengers who ripped articles of clothing on the arm rests in train cars.  The arm rests were notorious for snagging clothes, especially pockets of pants, and destroying the clothing.

According to the MTA, the overall cost of personal injury claims was about $335 million less than expected for the decade from 1997-2007.  The MTA has been responsive to major sources of problems and thereby effectively lowered their settlement costs.
