Massachusetts Doctors Pay Lower Malpractice Premiums

June 9th, 2008 · No Comments

A current study reveals Massachusetts doctors are paying less in malpractice suits today than they were in 1990, especially when adjusted for levels of inflation.  The results of this study contradict the popular idea that the high cost of malpractice lawsuits is driving reputable doctors out of the state.  Massachusetts ranks fourth in the nation for the total amount of money paid out in medical malpractice lawsuits.

The main author of the study argues that if Massachusetts is not having a high cost malpractice crisis, it is unlikely other states are either, despite popular beliefs.  According to the American Medical Association, because the state does not have a cap on the upper limit of settlements, Massachusetts doctors are financially burdened because of high insurance premiums.  However, doctors are still paying less than in 1990, once inflation is controlled.
